The Road to Success is Paved with Goals

JG_success1Goals unlock your positive mind and release ideas and energy for attaining those goals. Without goals you simply drift and flow on the winds of life. With goals you fly like an arrow straight and true to your target.

Why people don’t set goals

  • Fear of failure
  • Fear of rejection
  • Think goals are not important
  • Don’t know how

The greatest enemies of success and happiness are negative emotions, top of which is fear.

There are two types of fear. A healthy fear is built in us to warn us of danger and is designed for us to react to it or avoid it; this fear is used for survival and action. The second type of fear is unhealthy, it is based on our mind’s perception of danger and tends to cripple us or cause inaction. This fear is related to anxiety and panic attacks. The first type of fear will subside after the danger is gone, the second type of fear is most always present regardless if there is any real or even a perceived fear present.

Overcoming the unhealthy fear.

An easy way to overcome unhealthy fear is to face it head on. Next time you are afraid of something ask yourself what is the worst thing that can happen? If that is embarrassment, losing money, or re-taking a class – just define the worst-case scenario in detail. Now take a good long look at it and accept that worst-case scenario as a reality. It might be getting laughed at by a group, I will lose $400 dollars, I will fail the class and need to take it over again. Ask yourself can I live with the worst-case scenario? Can I find a way to get up and dust myself off if the worst-case scenario happens? Is there a plan B if I fail.

By embracing the worst-case scenario and not being afraid of it, fear will leave you!

Great athletes do not think, “I hope I don’t fail” every time they swing a club, take a shot or throw a ball. The greats don’t fear failure because they have already failed hundreds of times! They learn to live with failure and do their best to make it a very small part of their game, by failing in practice and learning to overcoming those things that cause failure.

One of my favorite sayings is “Failure is simply a form of learning for future success.”

Anyone that has achieved anything of worth in life has a history of failures on that road to success.

So now that you know how to conquer fear, how do you set goals?

Goals not written down and with out a completion date are just wishes.

My grandfather was a schoolteacher and turkey farmer. I still remember his sage advice on the difference between work and wishing he would say “hold out both your hands, now spit in the left-hand and wish in the right-hand and see which hand fills up first”. I still get a laugh anytime I replay that lesson in my mind and how true it is.

The fact is if we do not commit ourselves to the goal by writing it down with as much detail and clarity as we can define, with a realistic and yet near-term time frame, we are just wishing.

Setting SMART Goals

Your goals need to have these five criteria to be effective goals. Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, Timely (SMART).

Specific

Provide as much detail of the finished goal so you know what it is you are aiming for. Bad: Spend more time with kids. Good: Make children a higher priority by spending more time during the week with them and at least 4 hours on Saturdays.

Measurable

How can you measure the goal to know if you completed it? Bad: I want to make more money. Good: I am going to increase my income by $2,000 a month.

Actionable

Your goal must be action based. Clear steps that you and others must take to get from point A to Z. Bad: I am going to lose 15 lbs before summer. Good: I am going to lose 15 lbs of weight by the following steps. I will walk 30 minutes each day, stop eating after 7pm and go to the gym after work 3 days a week. Most worthwhile goals have sub-goals.

Realistic

Your goal must be realistic which is measured by abilities, circle of influence, time frame, stamina, etc. Bad: Retire from work by 25 years old (when you are flat broke and 24 years old). Good: Become financially independent by 40 years old. I now have more time and can define what independent is through making money and spending less.

Timely

You can do all the above steps and put no timeline on accomplishing a goal and it is still a wish, could be a very well documented wish but there is no sense of urgency for completion. There is always tomorrow. Bad: Take spouse on a second honeymoon. Good: Take a second honeymoon for our 15-year anniversary in 2 years.

So what are you waiting for?

Successful people don’t WISH for things, they set SMART Goals to accomplish what they want. Start with simple things and work up your confidence. You can do it!
